France’s new president has chosen Mali as his first official visit outside Europe.
Emmanuelle Macron arrives in the West African country on May 19, where he is expected to meet about 1,000 French troops.
As a candidate, he was eager to differentiate himself from former French presidents and the relationship with France’s former colonies.
Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports from Mali’s capital, Bamako.
