Ever fancied riding an electric scooter? You might soon get your chance.
Rental e-scooters will become legal on UK roads from July 4.
The vehicles are banned on pavements and limited to 15.5mph. Riders will be encouraged to wear helmets and you’ll have to have a full or provisional car, motorcycle or moped driving licence to use one.
But privately owned e-scooters will remain illegal on UK roads.
The Government says it’s allowing 12 month road trials of rental e-scooters to help ease the burden on public transport amid the Covid-19 crisis.
It also says that it’s a chance to introduce “convenient, clean and cost-effective travel.”
E-scooters for hire are already a familiar sight in European and US cities.
Now companies like Tier Mobility, Voi and Bird are vying to operate in UK towns and cities.
But critics have voiced concerns about safety for pedestrians, riders and vulnerable people when the e-scooters are allowed on UK roads.
