Egyptian archaeologists discovered more than 80 coffins on Monday in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, a burial ground that is also home to one of the world’s oldest pyramids. In photos and videos published by antiquities authorities, the discovery showed finely painted sarcophagi, as well as a collection of coloured and gilded wooden statues. The coffins are around 2,500 years old and have not been opened, said a statement by the ministry of antiquities and tourism. “The number of coffins that we will be announcing in the coming period, apart from the previous 59, surpasses 80 coffins,” said Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the supreme council of antiquities, in a video released by the prime minister’s office. Earlier this month, Egypt showcased a set of newly discovered coffins belonging to priests and clerks from the 26th dynasty nearly 2,500 years ago. Ancient Egypt was a civilization of ancient North Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River, situated in the place that is now the country Egypt.

Ancient Egyptian civilization coalesced around 3100 BC with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under Menes.

The civilization was notable for the early development of an independent writing system, mathematics, and medicine, construction projects including pyramids, obelisks and temples, trade and even a peace treaty with surrounding regions, the first planked boats, as well as a formidable military. Ancient Egyptian society included a bureaucracy of elite scribes, religious leaders, and administrators under the control of a pharaoh, who ensured the cooperation and unity of the Egyptian people in the context of an elaborate system of religious beliefs.
