Global News published this video item, entitled “Egypt unveils a new discovery of over 80 sealed coffins in ancient necropolis” – below is their description.
Egyptian archaeologists discovered more than 80 coffins on Monday in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, a burial ground that is also home to one of the world’s oldest pyramids. In photos and videos published by antiquities authorities, the discovery showed finely painted sarcophagi, as well as a collection of coloured and gilded wooden statues. The coffins are around 2,500 years old and have not been opened, said a statement by the ministry of antiquities and tourism. “The number of coffins that we will be announcing in the coming period, apart from the previous 59, surpasses 80 coffins,” said Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the supreme council of antiquities, in a video released by the prime minister’s office. Earlier this month, Egypt showcased a set of newly discovered coffins belonging to priests and clerks from the 26th dynasty nearly 2,500 years ago.
