United Nations published this video item, entitled “”Education is not reading or maths, it is to create a protective environment” – ECW Press Conference” – below is their description.
Yasmine Sherif, Director of Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the UN global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, briefs reporters on ECW’s new Annual Results Report, which highlights results achieved for crisis-affected girls and boys. Ms. Yasmine Sherif also speaks about ECW’s #222MillionDreams campaign.
Launching the Education Cannot Wait’s (ECW) new Annual Results Report, Director Yasmine Sherif today (23 Aug) told journalists in New York that there are 78.2 million children in conflict affected areas “that don’t even go to school,” while another190 million that receive some education “but can’t read and write, they can’t do math.”
Sherif said the 2021 report, is titled ‘We Have Promises to Keep and Miles to Go Before We Sleep’ because “that’s the reality, we have made promises through the Sustainable Development Goal 4 and through human rights conventions, that every child, even if you’re left furthest behind, in conflict, in emergencies, climate induced disaster, as a refugee, we promised them a quality education.”
She said, in one year, ECW has reached 3.7 million children and adolescents “who live in the darkest corners of the world, whether in militia-controlled areas of Central African Republic, where they are in Syria in the countryside, in Aleppo, or they are in Mali, Bamako, or in chard or in the Democratic Republic of Congo, even in Afghanistan, 3.7 million with a holistic quality education.”
Asked about the situation in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over the government, Sherif said, “our programs have not been stopped. The Agha Khan Foundation has been Afghanistan for decades, is still implementing as is the Swedish committee for Afghanistan. And I also want to point out that not all Taliban are against girls’ secondary education. I have spoken, of course, informally as we do, because we have to engage, and there are those who want to see their own secondary girls or adolescent girls go to school.”
Education Cannot Wait (ECW) is the United Nations global, billion-dollar fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises.
