The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge speak to their children every day about the difficult work being undertaken by frontline NHS staff, it emerged yesterday.
The Duke said they wanted Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two, to “understand all of the sacrifices” being made during the pandemic.
He was chatting via video call to medics from Homerton University Hospital in east London.
Dr Carlo Prina, consultant physician and clinical lead for acute ambulatory care, made the “horror of the situation” clear, stating that the current wave was worse than the first and that the medical and nursing teams had never been more stretched.
The Duke said: “A huge thank you for all the hard work, the sleepless nights, the lack of sleep, the anxiety, the exhaustion and everything that you are doing, we are so grateful.
“You are all in my thoughts. Catherine and I and all the children talk about all of you guys every day, so we’re making sure the children understand all of the sacrifices that all of you are making so thank you so, so much. Good luck, we are all thinking of you.”
The Duke, who along with the Duchess is patron of NHS Charities Together, said he wanted to find out how they were coping and how things had changed since the first wave of the virus last spring.
In the past week, Homerton University Hospital has had to cope with its highest number of admissions since the pandemic began.
