Video captured by a drone on Saturday shows more than 10,000 migrants gathered under a bridge in southern Texas, creating a political and humanitarian challenge for U.S. President Joe Biden.
The Texas border town of Del Rio has been overwhelmed by a surge in migrants, most of them from Haiti, with hundreds more headed toward the border.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake ravaged the island country on Aug. 14.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it is working with nations where the migrants began their journeys – for many of the Haitians, countries such as Brazil or Chile – to accept returned migrants. It is also accelerating flights to Haiti and other destinations within the next 72 hours, it said.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is sending an additional 400 agents to the Del Rio sector to deal with the unfolding crisis.
