Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing reiterated a promise on Saturday to hold elections after last month’s coup and said that violent acts were inappropriate.
Security forces reportedly shot and killed at least 64 people in the country also known as Burma, news reports and witnesses said.
Hundreds of anti-coup protesters also filled the streets of Launglon town. Protesters have taken to the streets almost daily since the coup that derailed Myanmar’s slow transition to democracy.
Until Friday evening, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) activist group counted at least 328 protesters who had been killed in the weeks of unrest. Its data shows that around a quarter of them died from shots to the head, raising suspicions they were targeted for killing.
