Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Thursday announced his government would be addressing paid sick leave for people forced into quarantine, saying people should not have to worry about their jobs or income just because they’re sick.

He says the province is now working on a solution because the federal government hasn’t expanded its own policy. However, when pressed on when further details would be released, Ford would not confirm a date.

The Ontario government had stated earlier in the week it was hoping the federal budget that was announced on Tuesday would fill in “gaps” in its program.

However, once announced, the budget did not implement any changes to the federal Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB), which pays $500 per week ($450 after taxes) for up to four weeks for anyone required to quarantine because of COVID-19. The feds had, however, been discussing possibly expanding the EI sickness benefit.

Ford made the virtual announcement from his home on Thursday. Late Tuesday Ford’s office said the premier was isolating after a staff member’s COVID-19 test came back positive. Ford’s test results came back negative according to his government.
