With his country gripped by not one, but two major crises – Donald Trump will tonight make his pitch for a second term as president.
His speech to the Republican Convention comes against the backdrop of a pandemic still causing devastation across the United States — and violence on the streets, after another police shooting of a black man.
Mr Trump’s message is certain to be strong on law and order – just as it was four years ago.
Whether he’ll break his silence on the cause of the unrest – the shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin – is less clear.
His opponents believe the president is fuelling the violence with his rhetoric, Joe Biden saying Mr Trump believes it helps his re-election campaign.
And as he makes his speech tonight, the protests are expected to arrive at the gates of the White House.
