U.S. President Donald Trump accepted the Republican Party’s renomination for president on Thursday at the party’s national convention, promising to “rekindle new faith in our values” and rebuild the economy once more following the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also said, being gathered at the White House, known as the “People’s House,” that they cannot help but marvel at the “great American story.” Trump has faced widespread criticism for hosting his acceptance speech at the White House, violating the Presidential precedent of not campaigning from the White House.
In addition to touting the various policies his administration has put in place, Trump also spoke about anti-racism protests in various cities that have ramped up since the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died on Memorial Day after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than seven minutes. He said the Republican Party condemns the “violence and danger” taking place in various U.S. cities, though Trump claimed many were in “Democrat-run cities.” He also said if Democrats want to stand with “anarchists, agitators,” it’s up to them but he will “not be a part of it.”
