“We can’t just stay in lockdown forever. We have got to transition,” Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has said despite a growing number of scientists voicing concerns about the easing of lockdown.
Mr Raab said the “careful” easing of the coronavirus lockdown was now the “right step” to take, shrugging off criticism that the latest measures are too much, too soon.
“We are taking those steps very carefully, based on the science but also based on our ability now to monitor the virus,” Mr Raab told Sky News.
However, scientists have raised concerns lockdown easing is happening too quickly for the country to contain the virus.
Devi Sridhar, professor of global public health at Edinburgh University, told Sky News:”It’s a big risk and gamble for exiting lockdown with a larger number of deaths than we did when we actually entered lockdown months back.”
Prof Sridhar said there is now a clear divide between Government and some scientists, but added that ultimately decisions will be made by politicians.
“I think what they should be saying is they consider the science, and hopefully they listen to it but the decision, and who actually has the accountability, are the politicians and leaders.”
