South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Dog meat festival in China continues despite Covid-19 concerns and public pressure” – below is their description.
While only a tiny portion of China’s population eats dog meat, about 10 million canines are still killed each year, according to the Washington-based Humane Society International (HSI). Thousands of dogs are slaughtered each June alone during the controversial Yulin Dog Meat Festival in southern Guangxi province. The industry has taken a hit because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which some experts believe is linked to the virus jumping species. But HSI China’s policy specialist Peter Li says the nation must also take the step of outlawing dog meat sales because of the “public health hazard”.
