Sky News Australia published this video item, entitled “Diversifying energy sources is ‘pie in the sky'” – below is their description.
The New South Wales government should refrain from prematurely closing down coal fired powered stations – as part of the state’s new energy roadmap – due to the unreliability of renewable energy sources, says Nationals MP David Gillespie. Energy Minister Matt Kean announced four of five existing coal-fired power stations would be closed across the state, with the aim of increasing energy storage capabilities and renewable energy sources. “This idea of a distributed energy system from renewable energy sources is just pie in the sky,” Mr Gillespie told Sky News. “Renewable energy has a part in the energy mix but to replace the baseload, that bit of energy that is pumping out all the time, the vast majority of that needs to be 100 per cent guaranteed. “And they’re building it on a system that theoretically will need a whole new grid, solar is only available 20 per cent of the time, wind is only available 30 per cent of the time. “So go figure how that is going to work. “Once you start integrating more than 10 per cent and then 20 per cent and 30 per cent you get a very unstable grid because renewable energy sources are what’s called asynchronised, they come and go with large surges.”
