Galina fled the town of Irpin with her cat called Masha, after Russian troops pulled out of several towns around Kyiv.
She was reunited with her uncle in Kyiv and told The Telegraph’s correspondent, Campbell MacDiarmid, about the intense Russian shelling and unexploded mines during the occupation.
“There were too many mines. They were lying. Close to our house in the park there was an unexploded mine,” she told MacDiarmid while driving to Kyiv.

She stayed behind to look after two elderly women. Her house has been destroyed in Irpin.
