Did Angela Merkel manage the refugee crisis of 2015? | DW News

“Wir schaffen das “or” We will manage it” was one remark of many that German Chancellor Angela Merkel made during a press conference in Berlin back in 2015. Over a million refugees arrived in Germany seeking asylum, making it the largest incoming refugee population since World War II. Her constituents — and the world — wanted to know how she would handle it.

Merkel’s remark launched a thousand think pieces, and it galvanized the far-right. Five years later, we’re using data to square how well Merkel’s policies have helped those refugees adapt and integrate into life in Germany. In essence, we answer the question: did Merkel manage it?
