Derek Chauvin sentenced to 22.5 years; George Floyd’s family, AG respond | FULL

Global News published this video item, entitled “Derek Chauvin sentenced to 22.5 years; George Floyd’s family, AG respond | FULL” – below is their description.

Former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin was sentenced Friday to 22.5 years in prison for the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, after a trial that was widely seen as a watershed moment in the history of U.S. policing. Chauvin was credited 199 days for time served.

Judge Peter Cahill announced his decision, stressing his job was not to rule based on public opinion or to send a message, instead it was his job to apply law to the facts. He said he also would attach a 22-page memo to his sentencing, explaining his reasoning.

On April 20, a jury found Chauvin, 45, guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter.

Family of Floyd reacted following the sentence, with his brother Terrence asking people to keep fighting for their rights and Philonise taking the time to instead remember his brother as well as other persons of colour killed in interactions with police. Rev. Al Sharpton also said that while Chauvin could have received more years in prison, it was the longest sentence received by a police officer in Minnesota. But he added it was “not justice,” as that would mean Floyd would still be alive.

Video of Chauvin, who is white, kneeling on the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in handcuffs, for nearly nine minutes, sparked outrage around the world and the largest protest movement seen in the United States in decades.
