Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, has been found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died after Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest on May 25, 2020.

The diverse jury deliberating on Monday shortly after the prosecutorial and defence teams finished delivering their closing arguments.

Chauvin is now facing up to 40 years in federal prison.

Reaction poured in following the verdict on Tuesday, with Attorney Ben Crump speaking in Minneapolis, joined by Floyd’s family.

U.S. President Biden said following the verdict that he had spoken with the family of George Floyd, adding that he assured them his administration would continue its fight to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Black Americans from Missouri to Florida to Minnesota cheered, marched, hugged, waved signs and sang jubilantly in the streets. But they also tempered those celebrations with the heavy knowledge that Chauvin’s conviction was just a first, tiny step on the long road to addressing centuries of racist policing in a nation founded on slavery.
