Demand for Isolation Pods Increasing Amid Coronavirus Outbreak, U.K. Company Says

The makers of isolation structures and pods say demand for their products has gone up “astronomically” since the new coronavirus outbreak. #Coronavirus #Covid19 #CoronavirusOutbreak

PPS in Milton Keynes is a manufacturing business producing personal protective equipment for industries handling hazardous materials.

Pam Parker, the company’s managing director said the company had been inundated with calls, including from China, asking for masks and other materials and was now working with several countries to develop units that could be used in places including cars and airports.

“Normally, where we sell throughout the world to armies, police, NHS and we do decontamination shelters, suits, and really for this outbreak, it’s been more prevention because we don’t know what it is, but we do know that we can try and prevent the spread of it,” Parker said.

Parker added that PPS shelters were being used for triage centers, taking swabs and doctor’s units and also isolation pods.

“Isopods are being put throughout the world in ambulances, in airplanes and being used so that if somebody does become critically ill, they’ve got the pod, no one else can get infected from it and they can be moved quite safely from one part of the world, even, to the other,” she explained.

In all, more than 94,000 people have contracted the virus worldwide, with more than 3,200 deaths.

In the UK, the number of virus cases jumped to 85 but Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government has warned that is expected to rise dramatically.

It unveiled a detailed, worst-case plan to fight the virus, but was at a loss for words Wednesday when asked about measures to protect lawmakers and staff in London’s crowded Parliament.

Lawmakers in Britain skew older.

WHO said about 3.4% of people infected with the COVID-19 virus globally have died, making it more fatal than the common flu.

The figure was a bit of a surprise since a study last week in the New England Journal of Medicine assessing data from more than 30 Chinese provinces estimated the death rate was 1.4%.
