Brazil’s Amazon rainforest is disappearing at an alarming rate, with deforestation surging to a 12-year high.

Scientists say the rainforest has suffered losses at an accelerated rate since Jair Bolsonaro became president.

Bolsonaro weakened Brazil’s environmental enforcement agency and called for more farming and mining in protected areas, arguing it would lift the region out of poverty.
