Global News published this video item, entitled “Daunte Wright shooting: Reaction after ex-officer Kim Potter charged with manslaughter” – below is their description.
Hours after Minnesota authorities arrested ex-police officer Kim Potter, who shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop, activist Reverend Al Sharpton and attorney Ben Crump held a news conference with the “Mothers of the Movement” – a group of women united after the killings of their Black sons – to show support to the slain man’s family.
Wright was shot on Sunday after being pulled over for what police said was an expired car registration. Officers discovered there was a warrant out for his arrest, and ex-officer Potter is said to have accidentally drew her pistol instead of her Taser during the confrontation with Wright, who got back into his car, officials said.
Speaking in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday after the 26-year police veteran was charged with second-degree manslaughter, Sharpton told reporters “Manslaughter is the least she should get.”
He added, “If she didn’t know in 26 years the difference in size and weight of a gun as opposed to a taser, then how was she a veteran in policing?”
Attorney Crump, who represents the Wright and Floyd families, called for convictions for both former police officers involved.
The men were joined by Gwen Carr, whose son Eric Garner died after being placed in a police chokehold in New York City, Lezley McSpadden, whose 18-year-old son Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri and Sybrina Fulton, whose 17-year-old son Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida.
