Dante Alighieri may be celebrated as one of the fathers of Italian literature, but he was a convicted criminal who was forced into exile until he died.

The writer of the ‘Divine Comedy’ is now being given a re-trial to posthumously clear his name.

The question is whether Italy’s courts can absolve one of the country’s most famous poets, seven hundred years after his death.

Al Jazeera’s Adam Raney reports from Dante’s hometown of Florence.
