Czech elections: Andrej Babis ahead despite Pandora Papers revelations | DW News

DW News published this video item, entitled “Czech elections: Andrej Babis ahead despite Pandora Papers revelations | DW News” – below is their description.

Polls have closed in the Czech Republic after two days of voting in parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Andrej Babis looks likely to hold onto power despite a scandal-ridden first term.

Results from early counting show his centrist ANO party has won the largest share of votes, at just over 30%. But it’s not clear if the Eurosceptic prime minister will be able to form a new coalition government. Prior to the election, Babis was alleged to have put millions of dollars into shell companies to buy properties in France. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The term “Pandora Papers” refers to a huge collection of data which was leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2021. The papers contained nearly 12 million documents, sourced from around the world, relating to corporate and financial transactions of wealthy individuals. Many global leaders, current and former politicians, political donors, and monarchs saw transactions, which would otherwise have remained secret, exposed to the public.

Very quickly, allegations of bribery, corruption, tax avoidance and several challenging ethical questions have been raised as a result of this data being made public.
