After months of lockdown, life as we used to know it came a big step closer.

Pubs and restaurants threw open their doors and families threw open their arms for emotional hugs they’ve stored up for more than a year.

You don’t even have to put up with the weather anymore – early this morning the first flights packed with sunseekers left dreary skies behind.

Today’s great re-opening across England, Scotland and Wales doesn’t quite have the celebratory feel it might have done a week ago, the rise of the so-called Indian variant prompting calls for caution and concern about the road ahead.

There’s no doubting though, that for many it’s been a day to savour.
