Officials from the the World Health Organization (WHO) are expected to provide an update Wednesday on the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly two years after China first reported a cluster of “viral pneumonia” cases in the city of Wuhan.
Daily COVID-19 infections have hit record highs in the United States, swathes of Europe and Australia as the Omicron COVID-19 variant races out of control, keeping workers at home and overwhelming testing centers.
The WHO says the number of COVID-19 cases recorded worldwide increased by 11 per cent last week compared with the previous week, with the biggest increase in the Americas. The gain followed a gradual increase since October.
The agency said in its weekly epidemiological report released late Tuesday that there were nearly 4.99 million newly reported cases around the world from Dec. 20-26.
