Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga formally declared a state of emergency in Tokyo on Thursday, with just two weeks to go before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics open.

Tokyo residents said they felt weary over the new state of emergency aimed at curbing rising coronavirus infections due to the highly contagious Delta variant.

The new restrictions, under which restaurants will be asked to stop serving alcohol, will begin on Monday and run through to Aug 22.

“I feel like ‘not again’ and I wonder whether there was more that could have been done before we got into this situation,” says 41-year-old Tokyo resident Nami Takahashi.

Tokyo Olympics organizers have also said the Games will go forth without spectators.
