Global News published this video item, entitled “COVID-19: FDA panel backs Pfizer booster only for 65+, high-risk Americans” – below is their description.
An advisory committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended giving booster shots for those aged 65 years and older, as well as those who run a high risk for severe disease. But the panel also shot down a plan to give the extra dose for most Americans aged 16 and older based on data they currently have.
Supporters of boosters pointed to data from Israel, showing severe cases sharply decreased in people over 60 after a third dose. But the decision not to approve for most Americans still can be seen as a blow to President Joe Biden and his administration’s effort to boost all Americans’ protection amid the spread of the Delta variant.
The panel rejected the wider plan for people aged 16 and older by a vote of 16-2, cast by a committee of outside experts who advise the FDA. A short time after the first vote, the experts voted 18-0 in favour of recommending the booster for those 65 and older and high-risk Americans.
