Federal health officials are expected to provide a COVID-19 update on Friday and present the latest pandemic modelling data amid the surge of Omicron cases.
Chief medical adviser Dr. Supriya Sharma said Thursday that Health Canada should be ready to make an authorization decision about Pfizer’s Paxlovid antiviral treatment for COVID-19 in a week to 10 days.
Canadian health leaders and some premiers have been publicly pressuring Health Canada to greenlight the medication, which prevents the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 from reproducing within a patient’s body.
The federal government also announced Thursday that a vaccine mandate for truck drivers crossing into Canada from the United States would start on Saturday.
Some areas of the country are easing pandemic restrictions while others are tightening them depending on their perceptions of whether the COVID-19 curve is flattening or has yet to peak. Quebec announced its controversial 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew will be lifted on Monday, while new restrictions come into effect Friday in New Brunswick.
