World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday that the organization “fully supports” efforts to reopen economies and “wants to see children back to schools,” but while making sure it’s being done safely.
Dr. Tedros made the remarks during a briefing on COVID-19 in Geneva as COVID-19 cases worldwide just passed 25 million.
He added that WHO has a range of evidence-based guidance for countries in order to help the safe reopening of economies and societies, with the recent guidance published for hotels cargo ships and fishing vessels.
The director-general thanked the European Commission for their Monday announcement to join WHO’s COVAX vaccine facility and for its contribution of €400 million.
The organization announced it’s developing a health services learning hub, a web-based platform that will allow countries to share experiences and learn from each other, in an effort to work with countries to provide tools to maintain essential services.
