Dr. Soumya Swaminathan with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday said they were encouraged by the results presented by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford in their late-stage vaccine trial, given recent announcements also by Pfizer and Moderna. She said the good news to take from the announcement was that vaccines for COVID-19 are possible to make and it’s possible they’ll have a number of viable vaccines to use. She stressed that they have to be able to cover millions of people in terms of vaccine deployment and they’ll need all the manufacturing capacity available to do so. Swaminathan also spoke about the different dosing types and the resulting efficacy, saying while the varying degrees were interesting to note, they will eventually have a larger population of results from the U.K. as well as other countries conducting studies with AstraZeneca, that will allow them to make a more informed decision on the overall efficacy of the vaccine. Her comments came after Oxford officials said that a dosing schedule that saw half a dose given and then a full dose produced 90 per cent efficacy, while a dosing schedule of a full dose followed by another full dose produced a 70 per cent efficacy.
