The World Health Organization’s (WHO) director-general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on Monday said he was in self-isolation after being identified as a close contact of a COVID-19 positive case. He said he is well and without symptoms but would following WHO protocols and remain self-quarantined for the coming days. He also said, with spikes of COVID-19 being seen in some countries in North America and Europe, leaders must “step up” as they face a “critical moment” in containing the latest coronavirus surge. Technical lead for COVID-19 Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove added one concern that with the increases in cases, hospitalizations and intensive care use are happening at the same time, as opposed to being staggered in the spring. She said this is creating situations in some countries that is resulting in many health care systems being overwhelmed.
