Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Health Critic Michelle Rempel sparred in the House of Commons on Wednesday over a disagreement over Trudeau’s role in approving – or not – an at-home rapid COVID-19 test. After Rempel admonished the speaker to remind Trudeau that it was “his job” to approve rapid at-home COVID-19 tests, the Prime Minister responded by saying it “concerned him” to hear the opposition health critic “does not understand that it’s not my job to approve tests” saying he would leave that determination to public health professionals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it had approved the first COVID-19 self-testing kit for home use that provides results within 30 minutes. The single-use test, made by Lucira Health, has been given emergency use authorization for home use with self-collected nasal swab samples in individuals age 14 and older who are suspected of COVID-19 by their health care provider, the FDA said. Health Canada has approved more than three dozen different tests for COVID-19. Only six of them are “point of care” or so-called rapid tests. None of them are at-home or self-testing kits.
