Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, chief medical officer of health Dr. Theresa Tam along with other health officials provided an update on the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday.
Trudeau defended his government’s decision to make a Conservative motion pushing for a committee into “ethical problems” with his government into a confidence vote, risking a possible election if it succeeds. Trudeau says the special committee would examine his government’s spending during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland added that the Liberal government “absolutely do not want an election, we are not seeking an election, the ball is now is the court of the opposition parties.”
Trudeau also announced that Canada has now surpassed 200,000 COVID-19 cases with almost 22,000 active cases. As of Tuesday, Canada has 202,833 confirmed cases of COVID-19 along with 9,972 deaths.
