A collapse in tourism due to coronavirus lockdown measures is threatening the existence of the Dinokeng Game Reserve, a conservation project like no other.
A one-hour drive from Johannesburg, South Africa, the 20,000 hectare park is home to the so-called ‘big five’: elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards and African buffalo.
The number of incursions made by poachers into the park has also tripled during the lockdown as intruders hunt for bushmeat – or a lucrative payday in the form of ivory or rhino horn.
