Quebec Health Minister Christian Dube is expected to provide an update on the province’s ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19 Thursday as registration for vaccines got underway.
On Tuesday, Premier Francois Legault announced the province will begin vaccinating the general public against COVID-19 starting next week. Registration for vaccine appointments began Thursday, allowing anyone born before 1936 to book a vaccination by phone or online.
Legault said anyone 85 years or older will be able to register and obtain their first dose as the government expands its inoculation campaign.
The rollout, which was launched in December 2020, initially focused on long-term care homes and seniors’ residences which were hard hit by the health crisis. Health-care workers on the front-lines of the pandemic and people in remote regions were also prioritized.
Legault say the mass vaccination of the elderly who live at home will begin in the Greater Montreal area because of the high number of novel coronavirus infections.
The province reported 858 new cases of COVID-19 and 16 additional deaths on Thursday.
