Quebec is considering easing some of its lockdown measures for certain regions that aren’t as hard hit by the novel coronavirus crisis starting in February.

Premier François Legault said Tuesday the measures in place are helping to bring down the number of new COVID-19 cases, but that hospitalizations, despite beginning to dip, remain high — especially in Montreal.

“The situation is very different in Montreal than what we’re living in the rest of Quebec,” he told reporters, adding that he will make an announcement next week.

The rules currently in place until Feb. 8 include a nightly curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. in a bid to limit the transmission of the virus. Quebec is the only province to implement such a measure during the pandemic.

This comes as the average number of COVID-19 cases in the province is dropping and attributed this to enhanced public health measures, like the nightly curfew. Legault said the average caseload is now around 1,500 cases a day, down from last week’s 2,500 COVID-19 case average.
