Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce said on Monday that the government would be “flexible” when it comes to reopening schools, and would work with school boards across the province to open schools safely.
I’ve indicated I’m comfortable with a staggered restart to enable schools a couple extra days,” Lecce said, adding that the government wants public health to be top of mind as schools reopen.
Lecce joined Premier Doug Ford on Monday as he answered reporter questions after delivering remarks at the 2020 Annual Conference of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
Ford once again called on teachers’ unions to work with the province on safely reopening schools, asking them to be flexible in negotiations with the province.
“Why don’t you be part of the solution, instead of the problem,” Ford said.
Ford claimed the government has met all the demands the unions have put forward, including cleaning, HVAC and additional teachers, but said the unions been unwilling to budge on requests put forward by the province.
