Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Thursday that the following day, Dec. 4, additional members of the province’s COVID-19 vaccine task force would be announced, joining Gen. Rick Hillier in the rollout of vaccines once they’re approved.
When asked why an Ontario COVID-19 vaccine task force wasn’t put together earlier, Ford said that what his government could guarantee is that it’ll be “ready” when a vaccine does come due to a “phenomenal team.” Health Minister Christine Elliott echoed what Ford said, but added there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.
The briefing comes as Health Canada reviews approval requests for several COVID-19 vaccine candidates, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) said the COVID-19 vaccines will “likely be limited and staggered” for several months after they receive the approval.
Doctors recommended that those at highest risk of contracting COVID-19 — including physicians and health-care workers, first responders and seniors living in long-term care and retirement homes — get vaccinated first.
Ontario reported 1,824 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, a jump in cases due to a data error for one local public health unit, bringing the provincial total to 121,746. The death toll in the province has risen to 3,712 as 14 more deaths were reported.
