Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to deliver an update Friday on the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On Wednesday, the premier announced his government will be providing nearly $1 billion dollars in funding to build better broadband across the province. This is part of the effort for Ontario’s “long-term economic recovery” amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to Ford, as access to high-speed Internet remains especially “important” during the COVID-19 outbreak. Ontario reported 1,003 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 81,693. It is the fourth time in the last two weeks the number of new cases in a 24-hour period surpassed 1,000. Active cases in Ontario now stand at 8,398. There were also 14 new deaths reported.
