Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says his government is working rapidly to ensure the supply of COVID-19 vaccines to all its citizens once available. In an address to the nation on Tuesday, Modi urged Indians to continue wearing masks and uphold social distancing rules to prevent further spread of the virus ahead of India’s festival season. “Recently, we saw many photos and videos where it is clearly seen that either people have stopped taking precautions or have become negligent. People are not careful anymore” he chastised citizens. “This isn’t right. If you are becoming negligent, if you step out without a mask, then you are putting yourself and your children. And the elders of your families at risk.” The country reported 46,790 new infections over 24 hours on Tuesday, taking its tally to nearly 7.6 million – the second highest caseload behind the United States. It also reported 587 deaths, bringing the total to 115, 197. Experts have warned that infections could rise in India as the holiday season nears, with celebrations for the Hindu festival of Durga Puja and Diwali due this month and in mid-November.
