Coronavirus: Grandma Wears Cardboard Suit As Covid-19 Protection

82-year-old Feridia Rojas, a retired nurse, shuffles through the streets of Havana on shopping excursions, wearing a protective cardboard box to ward off the coronavirus, a novel twist in adhering to government-imposed protective measures.

The government offers home delivery of basic goods to pensioners like Rojas, but she says she needs the exercise and likes her independence.

So, one day she came up with a slightly unusual answer to her predicament using locally sourced materials.

In this case, a cardboard box with cut-out sections allowing her to see ahead.

According to experts, people in Rojas’s age group are most at risk from complications of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and as a former nurse she understood better than most what that meant.

To remain active, Rojas scrambled to find a way to go out and remain relatively safe, prompting her to create her own enclosed safety gear using a cardboard box.

Now, she feels secure enough to go out shopping at her local store, to the delight and bemusement of her neighbours, and passersby.
