France will go back into a nationwide lockdown to try and contain further spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an address to the nation on Oct. 28. The new measures he announced — which come into force on Oct. 30 — will mean people have to stay in their homes, except to buy essential goods, seek medical attention or use their daily one-hour allocation for exercise. Macron stated that “wherever possible, working from home should again be the norm” and that most schools would remain open. The new measures echo the eight-week lockdown that France imposed in the spring, when hospitalizations and deaths caused by the novel coronavirus reached a peak. France’s death toll, at over 35,000, is the seventh highest in the world, according to Reuters data.
