Coronavirus: Fauci says politicizing public health “destructive” to pandemic response

Global News published this video item, entitled “Coronavirus: Fauci says politicizing public health “destructive” to pandemic response” – below is their description.

Leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Monday that growing divisiveness had made it “extremely problematic” to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

“When public health issues become politically charged, like wearing a mask or not becomes a political statement, you cannot imagine how destructive that is to any unified public health message,” Fauci said during a panel discussion about COVID-19 at the World Economic Forum.

COVID-19 has spiraled out of control for months in the U.S., even with a massive vaccination campaign underway. The U.S. death toll has exceeded 405,000 and infections have reached over 24 million, the highest numbers anywhere in the world.

Former President Donald Trump often sought to play down the severity of the country’s worst public health crisis in a century and left much of the planning to individual states, resulting in a patchwork of policies.

“We had a situation where instead of concentrating from the top on the science and realizing that we must make decisions based on data and based on evidence, there was a considerable amount of mixed messaging about what needed to be done from the top down,” Fauci said while reflecting on his time under Trump.
