Coronavirus: Canadian officials provide update as 1st COVID-19 vaccines administered

Global News published this video item, entitled “Coronavirus: Canadian officials provide update as 1st COVID-19 vaccines administered” – below is their description.

Minister of International Development Karina Gould and Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand provided an update Monday after Ontario has administered the provinces’ first COVID-19 vaccination, hours before Quebec expects to administer its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Ministers Gould and Anand also announced that the government of Canada would be contributing $230 million to “procure COVID-19 therapies for use in developing countries,” as well as investing an additional $255 million to support the “critical work” of the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator.

The announcement was made following the arrival of the 1st batch of coronavirus vaccines in the country Sunday night. Anand said she was on hand as some of the vaccines arrived, stating the country is “charting its path forward toward recovery.”

When asked how the government is preparing to inform Canadians about the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as how to respond to various reactions following its approval, Anand said she has “full confidence” in Health Canada and that “all elected representatives have a role to play in supporting scientific research” and Health Canada’s decisions.

Since the vaccine was approved by Health Canada Wednesday, provincial health authorities have outlined their plans to distribute its doses — with most slated to begin with its at-risk or front-line health-care worker populations first.
