Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to address Canadians on Tuesday to provide an update on the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam and Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo are expected to speak following the prime minister. The briefing comes as regions across Canada braced for a host of new public health restrictions as the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic sent case counts soaring from coast to coast. Across the country on Sunday, health authorities identified a total of 5,713 new cases of the virus as well as 66 more deaths. The new infections bring the country’s total cases to 337,242. The prime minister said on Friday that he is urging Canadians to reduce their contacts as COVID-19 cases have “massively” spiked across the country. Trudeau said Bill C-9, which became law on Thursday, will help businesses through this second wave with a rent subsidy that will go to tenants and not the landlords and that the wage subsidy has been extended through to June 2021.
