Global News published this video item, entitled “Coronavirus: Canadian health officials on what trends to watch for as schools reopen | FULL” – below is their description.
Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam along with Dr. Howard Njoo, Canada’s deputy chief public health officer, provided an update on the country’s current COVID-19 numbers and situation on Friday. Students across Canada will be fully back to class by the end of this week, which has worried some officials about a further rise in cases. Some provinces that have seen classes resume have announced cases in schools, including Quebec and Alberta. Tam provided information on what trends officials are looking for as students begin classes, including if the age group of COVID-19 case distribution changes, and whether lab testing positivity rates shift. She added that “there will be no blanket approach across the country,” as it is important for them to look at situations locally. When asked about her concern regarding the growing COVID-19 cases across Canada, Tam told reporters that it is important to monitor not just the case numbers, but also the “speed of acceleration” of COVID-19. She added that a critical factor is the ability to contact trace. The country added another 630 new coronavirus cases Thursday, continuing an upward trend as schools fully reopen to students across the country. Excluding Wednesday, the country has now reported over 600 new cases daily for a full week, a feat not seen since early June.
