Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Friday that the COVID-19 pandemic is contributing to an increase in drug-related overdoses and deaths.
Dr. Tam said that the current public health measures put in place to reduce the spread of the virus may increase isolation, stress and anxiety and, in turn, increase drug and substance usage.
“Addiction is not a choice, it’s a treatable medical condition,” she added as she urged people to seek help for themselves and people they know by calling social services or visiting supervised consumption sites.
“There are indications that the street drug supply is going more unpredictable and toxic in some parts of the country,” She added.
Canada reported a total of 126,848 cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, including 9,102 deaths.
The recovery rate currently stands at 89 per cent.
