Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand announced on Tuesday that the government has signed an agreement with Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical company, to purchase up to 72 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, as well as another agreement with Moderna to purchase additional 14 million doses of its vaccine candidate. The announcement was made during Tuesday’s COVID-19 update with Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer. Tam has tweeted earlier on Tuesday morning the latest updates on COVID-19 numbers, reporting over 145,000 cases and an average of 2.1% test positivity rate overall. Tam has always iterated on the importance of keeping the test positivity rate below 1, to keep the pandemic under control. Tam said the ongoing increase in national daily COVID-19 case counts is an indicator of “accelerated epidemic growth,” which increases “the likelihood that we could lose the ability to keep COVID-19 cases at manageable levels.” Ontario, the country’s biggest province, reported 478 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 47,752. Tuesday’s increase in cases marks the highest one-day increase since May 2.
