Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw continued to assure Albertans that current measures will keep COVID-19 variants from spreading.
During her daily update on Thursday, Dr. Hinshaw said ,“The measures that we have in place with respect to public health, the distancing, masking, the regular things we’re asking all Albertans to do every day — those are things that will protect us.”
The 11 new cases identified Thursday they were the B.1.1.7 variant first identified in the United Kingdom. Seven of those cases had no known link to travel.
Hinshaw also touched upon the COVID-19 vaccine and its efficacy against the variants of the virus.
“These vaccines still appear to be extremely effective at preventing severe cases, hospitalizations and deaths,” she said.
There were 421 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Alberta on Thursday and 13 additional COVID-related deaths reported. There were 517 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, with 93 of those cases in intensive care.
