Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw on Thursday announced new voluntary restrictions for the City of Edmonton as the province reported 364 new cases of COVID-19, with 276 in the city. Hinshaw said the restrictions, effective Thursday, are voluntary because there is sufficient hospital beds and capacity. All families and private social gatherings should be limited to no more than 15 people, but does impact schools or formal gatherings where the organizer is ensuring COVID-19 measures are implemented, such as theatres or worship services. Masks are being recommended to be worn in all indoor work settings, except when alone in work spaces. As well, Hinshaw asked people to limit their cohorts to three: their core household, their school cohort and no more than one other sport or social group. Alberta’s top doctor said there are currently 1,251 active cases in the Edmonton zone and the positivity rate increased to four percent. She said 11 per cent of active cases in Edmonton worked or attended social gatherings while symptomatic, a fact she said was concerning, with two of five cases in the city exposed by a close contact.
