Alberta chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw is expected to provide an update on the state of COVID-19 in the province on Tuesday.
Last week, Alberta announced it would be suspending a COVID-19 border testing pilot program at YYC Calgary International Airport after new federal travel restrictions come into effect, Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced on Thursday.
As of Feb. 22, all travellers coming into Canada will be required to have a COVID-19 test at the border and quarantine at a designated hotel.
The border testing pilot project was launched in November. It allowed people to opt in to take a COVID-19 test. If they tested negative, it would allow them to shorten the required quarantine time as long as they followed other rules that went above and beyond the normal health restrictions.
Alberta identified 251 new cases of COVID-19 in the province on Monday and recorded two additional deaths related to the disease.
Hinshaw also announced there were 356 patients in hospital with COVID-19 as of Sunday, with 58 people in the ICU.
Alberta has now confirmed 171 cases of people infected with COVID-19 variants, 164 of the B.1.1.7 strain first identified in the U.K. and seven of the N501Y strain first found in South Africa.
